A common surprise in our first calls: a company ranks well on Google for its core keywords, yet AI engines recommend competitors for the same questions. The two are related, but they are not the same game.
Reason 1: the question is different
People type short keywords into Google ("crm software") but ask AI full questions with context ("best CRM for a 20-person team that sells on WhatsApp"). Your page may rank for the keyword without answering the question.
Reason 2: engines summarise other people's opinions
Generated answers lean heavily on third-party sources: reviews, listicles, comparisons and communities. If those sources don't mention you, or describe you inaccurately, your own ranking can't fully compensate.
Reason 3: your pages are hard to quote
Long pages with the answer buried in paragraph nine are hard to lift. Clear answer blocks, tables, definitions and FAQs make your content much easier for an engine to cite.
Reason 4: the engine isn't sure what you are
If your positioning is inconsistent across your site, profiles and directories, engines hedge. That's an entity gap, and structured data plus consistent descriptions help close it.
Closing the gap
- Map the real buyer questions, not just keywords
- Create pages that answer them directly
- Get represented on the sources engines cite
- Measure Share of Answer alongside rankings
That is the loop we run every month. See pricing or book a call to talk it through.
