Rank tracking assumes a list of ten blue links. AI answers don't work that way. A buyer asks a question and gets a paragraph that names three vendors, or none. You are either in that paragraph or you are not.
The definition
Share of Answer is the percentage of commercially relevant AI answers in which your brand is mentioned or recommended, measured on a fixed prompt set, by engine, every month.
If you track 120 prompts and appear in 37 answers, your Share of Answer is 31%.
Why a fixed prompt set matters
AI output varies. Ask the same question twice and the answer can change. That's why one-off screenshots are misleading. Measuring the same set of prompts on a schedule smooths out the noise and makes trends visible.
What sits underneath it
Share of Answer is the headline. Under it, we report:
- Appears / recommended / cited for each prompt
- Visibility by engine, because ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews behave differently
- Competitor share on the same prompts
- Sources each engine relied on
- Classic SEO metrics: organic clicks, impressions and referring domains
What it doesn't do
It doesn't promise a citation. Nobody can responsibly guarantee AI output. What it does is make the work accountable: the same questions, measured the same way, so you can see whether the effort is moving anything.
See how we use it in how it works.
